Who should take this course?

  • First responders, fire fighters, environmental field workers and persons who may be doing confined space entries
  • Persons preparing to take the competency assessment for the AIHA 4-Gas/PID Registry Program

What can you expect to learn?

Using case studies and real-life scenarios, this course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to:

  • Select and correctly use the right 4-gas meter and/or photoionization detector (PID) to assess field conditions and potential worker exposures
  • Identify chemicals’ structures and physical properties that are important for sampling and interpreting results
  • Understand the use and limitations of the common types of sensors, including:
    Interpreting sensor specifications
    • Cross-sensitivities
    • Sensor failures and their causes
  • Understand the use and limitations of PIDs and interpretation of PID readings
  • Use instrument readings to assist in making decisions
  • Understand the why, when and how of instrument calibration vs. functional and calibration checks
  • Use data logging in complex situations and for assistance in exposure assessment

The competency assessment for the 4-Gas Meter/PID AIHA Registry Program will be offered on Sunday, June 17, 2012 in Indianapolis, IN. The competency assessment consists of a written portion and a hands-on practicum.  Persons who successfully pass both portions of the competency assessment will be eligible for the Registered Operator credential.  Visit AIHA Registry Programs for additional information.

Participants must bring their own meter. ANY make/model of the 4 gas meter is acceptable for use in this course and will be used mainly in the practicum.  This course is not a hands-on instruction class for the basic usage of your meter; participants should come to the course with working knowledge of their meter.
